Why Manchester City Should Avoid Making A Winter Move For Bayern Munich Star Joshua Kimmich

German defender Joshua Kimmich was linked with a move to join Manchester City in the summer, but the move did not materialise as Pep Guardiola completed a move for Tottenham Hotspur right-back Kyle Walker. With the January window coming up, City are believed to be interested in the Bayern Munich star once more. Guardiola worked with the 22-year-old at the German club before, and seems to have been impressed by his versatility and ability to play as either a full-back, centre-half or as a midfielder.

Kimmich’s career graph at his current club has been topsy-turvy, to say the least. He has had his good and bad times, but the player somehow manages to smile through it as he soldiers on, doing his duty.

Since veteran coach Jupp Heynckes took over the team following the dismissal of Carlo Ancelotti, he has recorded three consecutive wins. Like most players, Kimmich immediately benefitted from everything that Heynckes had to offer – one of which is stability.

Kimmich has easily been Bayern’s most impressive and most consistent player throughout the tough times under Carlo Ancelotti. The defender continued starting and finishing every game, with 3 goals and 4 assists to show for his efforts. Moreover, the player has also created more chances than anyone else.

Having said that, there is no denying that the player has certainly struggled to get to this point with Bayern Munich. In the 2016-17 season, Lahm was deployed on the right-hand side of the defence and Ancelotti found little space for the young Germany international in the centre. This certainly took a toll on him, especially after a breakthrough campaign under Guardiola. Thus, it is understandable as to why the player wanted to leave.

However, Kimmich then came back to playing on the right-hand side of the defence under Ancelotti, which saw him get restored to the starting XI. From then on, Kimmich has played with the kind of verve and power that few established names could muster, and even more so after Ancelotti’s departure.

With Heynckes back as the emergency care-taker, Kimmich should be confident that the tide has turned. There’s more emphasis on structured wing play now. Kimmich and Arjen Robben, the duo on the right, look like an exciting duo and it remains to be seen how far they can go.

In such a situation, it makes no sense for Kimmich to consider joining Manchester City. Guardiola already has the services of Kyle Walker to depend on, and after spending so much on him, City can instead focus on spending their inexhaustible reserves elsewhere. With the new wave of optimism surrounding Bayern, it makes more sense for the player to continue there instead of making the leap to join a club where he may have to forego regular playing time.
