According to a report by ESPN, Manchester City are considering the prospect of activating the £20m buy-back clause in Aaron Mooy‘s contract this summer.
The Australian midfielder currently plays for Huddersfield Town but when City sold him to the Terriers last summer, they were smart enough to insert a buy-back clause. And after his top-class performances last season, City’s interest in him is absolutely understandable. But should the Citizens attempt to bring him back to the Etihad?
The 27-year-old progressed through Bolton’s youth academy and established himself as one of their best youth stars before moving to St Mirren. After spending some time in Scotland, he joined Western Sydney Wanderers in 2012.
But in 2016, Mooy attracted attention from Manchester City, who was quick to snap him up. But he was immediately loaned out to Huddersfield Town.
The 27-year-old went on to play a major role for David Wagner’s men in the 2016/17 campaign as they fought tooth-and-nail to secure a promotion to the Premier League. After securing promotion, the Yorkshire club was quick to sign Mooy on a permanent basis. However, as mentioned earlier, Manchester City inserted a buy-back clause in the deal.
Mooy can dominate the midfield like no other. His defensive skills are top-notch and he never shies away from contributing to the attack. In fact, he is always on the prowl for a key pass and his ball-retention skills are quite admirable.
Furthermore, his skills were on display in Russia as well as he impressed while representing Australia at the World Cup. Wagner must keep him at Huddersfield but the manager will be rendered helpless if City decide to activate the buy-out clause.
As far as City are concerned, they could utilize a player of Mooy’s calibre. Although they have quality options like Kevin De Bruyne, Fernandinho, David Silva, Fabian Delph and Bernardo Silva, Mooy could add a new dimension to the club’s midfield.

Thus, it could be a smart move for City but Mooy’s potential exit will create a plethora of problems for the Terriers. He is one of their key players and losing him at such a pivotal time could be their undoing next season. However, if Mooy does leave the club, Wagner must work towards creating a contingency plan at the earliest.
