The transfer of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal to Liverpool was one of the biggest shocks of the window. Although everyone knew that the player had grown weary at the Emirates and that the club was eager to sell him, no one would have guessed that he’d be sold to a direct Premier League rival.
Along with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott, Calum Chambers and Jack Wilshere, Chamberlain was a part of an Arsenal group of players who were expected to make it to the very top of the footballing world and form the core of the team. However, none of them have really reached their true potential, and at 24, he has decided to look for greener pastures.
Under Jurgen Klopp, Chamberlain can expect a manager who’d place his trust and gets the best out of him. Here are the 3 reasons why he can finally reach his true potential at Anfield, and perhaps even emulate the great Steven Gerrard:
Unlike Wenger, who focuses more on the development of the group as a whole, Klopp is committed to the personal improvement of his players. He studies them individually, then figures out how to get the best out of them. It happened with Marco Reus, Robert Lewandowski, Shinji Kagawa and Ilkay Gundogan at Borrusia Dortmund, and with the likes of Emre Can, Phillipe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson at Anfield. Chamberlain, in all probability, will benefit in the same manner.
At Arsenal, the 24-year-old had turned into a utility player, playing as a wingback, full-back, central midfielder and as a winger as well. He was denied a role in the midfield, where he thrives the most and despite having good pace and intelligence, has scored only 9 goals for the Gunners over six seasons.
At Liverpool, he will be slotted into a midfield role alongside Can and Henderson and will make a much larger impact in terms of dictating the play. Moreover, he can also provide creativity up front in the absence of Coutinho or Salah, which will come in handy during the course of the season.
At Arsenal, the England international was often at the heart of abuse from the fans. It was easy to turn him into a scapegoat for the chastening defeats the club faced over the seasons, and the atmosphere had become really toxic for a young player to prove himself. At Merseyside, he will be far better off amidst the supporters who are ready to give time to their £40million acquisition. He can frame his future at Liverpool.
