Why Liverpool should keep hold of this injury-prone Englishman to use him as a super sub

Why Liverpool must not sell Daniel Sturridge this summer

Daniel Sturridge is probably one of the most gifted strikers of this generation but for the longest time, he has been a victim of cruel injuries. He has the ability to change a game at any point in time and is an immensely classy player. However, he lacks fitness and that has led to a downward spiral in his career.

With Luis Suarez by his side in the 2014 season, Sturridge was on fire for Liverpool. He scored 25 goals back then and was a fearsome attacker in the Premier League.

But since the start of his career, Sturridge has been a victim of multiple injuries all over his body. He has missed close to 500 days of action because of his long injury list.

Still got the goods

Despite his multiple injury concerns, Sturridge could be resourceful for numerous Premier League teams. He is a good forward and a lethal finisher when given the chance.

In fact, in the 2014 season, he scored 25 goals and provided nine assists from a mere 33 games – which are great numbers for any forward in any league, let alone the top-tier of English football.

Sturridge has shown that he can also lead the line in the absence of a recognized forward. It is only now that Liverpool can rely on Firmino, Mane and the brilliant Salah. But if one of them get injured next season, Sturridge can be utilized as a backup to work in tandem with them.

Big game finisher

Another telling aspect about Sturridge is his ability to step up on the big stage. He has scored goals against the top-six clubs in the league, meaning Liverpool must retain him as a super sub. With Danny Ings and Sturridge as backups, the forward trio will have two talented players to depend upon when required.

Also, Sturridge is relatively young at the age of 28, meaning he still has at least 3-4 years of good football left in him.

While a decision needs to be made on his future, Sturridge must strive to keep himself fit. If he manages to do that, any team could gain a massive advantage. For now, he must continue with Liverpool and try to work his magic next season.
