Why Lampard and Derby County could be taking a major gamble if they lose this 33-year old and end up signing John Terry

Share

Frank Lampard was named Derby County boss only last week but it goes without saying that the former Chelsea icon will be looking for reinforcements. Interestingly enough, John Terry is said to be his number one priority.

Terry left Aston Villa after his contract came to an end but it goes without saying that he essayed a key role for them last season. He played 36 games for the Birmingham outfit but he might be up for a reunion with Lampard at Derby County, despite the fact that he’ll turn 38 in December.

But for the transfer to happen, current Derby captain Curtis Davies must leave. While Terry is an extremely classy and experienced player. it would be a major gamble for Lampard to let Davies leave.

Curtis Davies

Davies joined the Rams last season from Hull and quickly became a rock at the heart of Derby’s defence. He played all 48 matches and helped his team maintain 20 clean sheets. The defender scored once and formed a solid partnership with Richard Keogh. In due course of time, he went on to replace Keogh as the captain.

His performance throughout the campaign was outstanding and there’s no doubt that the fans love him. Furthermore, Davies is used to the surroundings at Pride Park, having shown remarkable adaptability since his move.

However, if Derby receive attractive offers for Davies, it might be tough to reject them. After all, the sale could bring in extra funds to strengthen other areas.

John Terry

Meanwhile, it is evident that Terry is the more decorated and experienced player but his age is not on his side. In fact, the coming season could be his last. His presence might be useful for his former teammate Lampard but given the circumstances, it would be better for Derby to retain Davies.

To be honest, there is nothing wrong with the current Derby captain or his performances. If anything, he has been exceptional. Hence, it would not make sense for Lampard to sign Terry at a time when he already has a promising and talented player at hand.
