Forget Azpilicueta – Chelsea would be capable of doing a better job by signing this 27-year-old La Liga dynamo

Why Chelsea should sign Sergi Roberto to replace Azpilicueta

Chelsea have done alright since Frank Lampard took over and the Blues are playing some great attacking football.

The defence is the major worry at the moment with the club unable to sign any fresh recruits in the summer.

It is to be seen if Chelsea’s transfer ban can be lifted in the winter window, but Football.london reports that the Blues are in the market for a right-back.

Cesar Azpilicueta

Cesar Azpilicueta has struggled in that position for a while and the Spaniard is 30-year-old. The Blues have Reece James who could play in that position, but the youngster is returning from an injury.

Azpilicueta could be shifted to the heart of the defence which would free up the right-back spot, and Football.london adds that Sergi Roberto could be targeted by the Blues.

A seasoned defender for Barcelona

Roberto is one of the most versatile members of the current Barcelona side and has played in the attack, midfield and defence.

The 27-year-old now features as a right-back for Ernesto Valverde’s side but is comfortable playing on the opposite flank too.

Sergi Roberto

The Spanish international is a great passer of the ball and could be one of the best full-backs when it comes to ball control and retention.

Azpilicueta could be cover for Roberto, should Chelsea land the Barcelona star, while James can continue his development and play some of the cup games.

The move for Roberto would also provide Chelsea respite in the heart of the defence as Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen haven’t been able to cut out the mistakes at the back.

Roberto has a few quality years left in him and could grow further at Stamford Bridge. There is a sizeable Spanish speaking group in the team too, which could help him adjust to the Premier League faster.

The 27-year-old’s contract is up in 2022 and Football.london adds that Barca could offload him soon rather than lose him on a cheap deal later.

Verdict

Roberto’s versatility allows him to play in the midfield and defence, and that would be great for Lampard.

The 27-year-old also has a ton of experience and would be a great replacement for the ageing Azpilicueta at the back.
