Why Brighton should keep hold of Lewis Dunk amidst Man United interest

According to a report in Express, Manchester United are keeping close tabs on Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back Lewis Dunk. The 26-year-old was also selected for the England squad for the first time during the November international games and he made his debut against the United States of America.

United didn’t spend on a centre-back in the summer transfer window, however, seeing how things have gone so far, getting a new defender wouldn’t be a bad option. The current back-line has managed to keep just one clean sheet and has shipped in 21 goals in 20 games, 16 more than their city rivals and league leaders, Manchester City.

Hence, one can imagine the gulf between the two clubs. Jose Mourinho is entitled to look for reinforcements in his squad.

Therefore, from the Red Devils’ perspective, it makes complete sense that they are in for a centre-back like Dunk who can command the back-line and be a leader. But Brighton shouldn’t let this move happen at any cost. Here’s why:

Lewis Dunk – Brighton’s treasure

Lewis Dunk has been a part of the Brighton setup ever since he started playing professional football (2010). He has featured over 200 times for the Seagulls, helping them to go from League One to the Championship, and then to the Premier League in 2017. Hence, the 26-year-old has been a part of this fantastic journey through and through.

Dunk and Shane Duffy have been together for a long time now. The Sussex-based club are looking to stabilise themselves in top-flight football and for that reason, they need their centre-back pairing to continue together.

Focusing solely on Dunk, he is a fantastic centre-back with abundant qualities. He is commanding in the air, which enables him to win aerial duels and be a threat in both boxes. He can read the attacks well and intercept when required, epitomising his strength to nullify the attacks before they become dangerous.

All in all, the 26-year-old is an ideal player for Brighton and they should not let him go at any cost. From the player’s point of view, if he is looking for a big move, the January transfer window may not be the right time. Instead, he should play out this season and wait for one of the big boys to come calling in the summer.
