Why Arsenal Must Avoid Appointing Brendan Rodgers As Their New Manager

Arsenal were renowned as an English powerhouse side with a never-say-die attacking attitude but it has been a while since any of us have seen any real fight from them. It is ironic that they have suffered this fate at the hands of the same man who took them to great heights.

Arsene Wenger’s legacy continues to diminish as the Gunners keep misfiring in an underwhelming manner. There has been an air of frustration surrounding Arsenal fans for a long time now and that only intensified after they lost terribly to hand Manchester City the Football League Cup on a silver platter.

Although Wenger was expected to leave last summer after Arsenal failed to secure a Champions League qualification spot, the club handed him a two-year contract extension.

However, he is once again expected to leave by the end of this season after the club put up a series of disappointing performances throughout the campaign so far. Despite making a high-profile move to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the results have been negative on the field.

 

However, as per latest reports, the Gunners could be targetting Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers as Wenger’s successor. While Rodgers is experienced enough, appointing him in that role will be equivalent to taking a massive step backwards for Arsenal.

To bring the Gunners out of their misery and lead them to greatness will be a herculean task and none of Rodgers’ previous stints has been enough proof to substantiate that he would be able to rise up to the task.

One might argue that Celtic are currently sitting at the top of the Scottish Premiership but there is a vast difference in the workings of the two league and we are all aware of how Rodgers’ tenure with Liverpool turned out. Moreover, Celtic might be working wonders domestically but the way they were dumped out of the Europa League is enough to suggest that Rodgers is not the right choice to solve Arsenal’s problems.

So when it comes to picking a new managerial candidate, Arsenal must aim higher. They have a brilliant team at present – they just need somebody who understands the modern game and is good at experimenting with tactics to bring out the best from the players in the squad.

It remains to be seen if they appoint Rodgers or not but if they are serious about winning trophies and establishing their reputation once more, the Celtic manager is certainly not the one to help them.
