Who’s This 20-Year-Old Midfield Sensation Set To Break Into Leicester City’s First Team? All You Need To Know

Scout Report – George Thomas

Leicester City striker George Thomas could break into the first-team squad sometime soon, after a string of splendid performances for the U-23 side. The Welshman also scored twice for his country in a 3-1 win in Liechtenstein in a European Championship qualifier recently. He has also made a big impact for the Foxes after joining as a free agent from Coventry City in the summer.

If the young talent manages to break through, it would be interesting to see how he fares, especially since it is believed that former manager Craig Shakespeare was quite invested in his development.

History

The 20-year-old, who went to Beauchamp College, in Oadby, and played junior football for the Oadby Owls before being spotted by Coventry, joined Leicester City only in August for an undisclosed fee.

In fact, the player is most famous for his astounding display at Coventry. Thomas scored against Wycombe in the EFL Trophy Semi Final which sent Coventry to their first Wembley final since 1987. Subsequently, Thomas scored the second goal for the club in a 2-1 win against Oxford United in the final.

Playing Style

The youngster is quite efficient in the midfield and his creativity and trickery are top-notch. Thomas is one of those rare midfielders who can provide support to the attack while also knowing when to drop back to defend well. If Thomas replicates the same form for the first team, he would undoubtedly make a mark for himself.

Adept at passing, Thomas can get a bit weak when it comes to aerial encounters but he more than makes up for it with his mature reading of the game. Despite being so young, his every move is well-calculated, and he has a penchant for dribbling as well.

Thomas’ Future

New Leicester City manager Claude Puel places a big emphasis on youth which will surely be a welcome sign for Thomas. He is talented and skilled enough to make it, and he could add depth to the midfield. He will face competition from their current crop of options but it will be important for Puel to ease him into the team.

With the January window coming up, there is no guarantee as to who will stay and who will leave, and in a situation like that, having a player like Thomas can certainly prove to be beneficial for the club. Puel has an uphill task ahead of him to regain Leicester’s former glory, and squad depth will certainly play a major role in his success.
