West Ham re-igniting their interest in this 28-year-old Huddersfield star would do them a world of good

Why West Ham should reignite their interest in Aaron Mooy

According to May’s report from the Times, West Ham were leading the chase for Huddersfield Town star Aaron Mooy.

The Australian international, 28, turned down offers from Brighton and Southampton to make his season-long loan at Huddersfield into a permanent transfer from Manchester City after playing a crucial role in their 2016/17 promotion campaign, the report adds.

And after Aaron Mooy single-handedly sunk Wolverhampton Wanderers at weekend that lifted Huddersfield Town out of the bottom three, West Ham must reignite interest in the midfielder.

West Ham are more settled under Manuel Pellegrini after a difficult start to the season that saw them lose first four back-to-back Premier League games. But they now find themselves 12th in the league table (at the time of writing), although Pellegrini and the fans have far more lofty ambitions particularly after the money that was spent in the summer transfer window.

Truth be told, West Ham have struggled for consistency this season and much is down to the injuries to their key players.

The Hammers signed Jack Wilshere from Arsenal on a free transfer earlier in the summer but just four games into the new season, his recurring issue with injuries saw him spend a spell on the sidelines.

Apart from Wilshere, Carlos Sanchez is another midfielder currently sidelined. This has left Pellegrini’s options in the midfield very light and with the busy schedule set to follow, the Chilean tactician has to find a way to use the likes of Pedro Obiang, Mark Noble and Declan Rice.

Even though Wilshere could return anytime soon from the injury, what West Ham lack is a combative midfielder in their ranks. Keeping in mind Noble’s age and Rice’s lack of mobility, a new midfielder would do them a world of good in January.

That said, Aaron Mooy would fit the bill at the London Stadium. Mooy is a classy operator of the ball, a player who can run the show in the midfield against quality players. He is a smooth and intelligent creative midfielder who is adept at picking out a pass and timing the challenges to perfection.

Aaron Mooy

The Aussie is blessed with a wonderful technique, ability, engine and while he may not be the most physically dominant midfielder, he certainly possesses the creativity to crack open defences from a deeper position. Mooy is a pass master, a fantastic reader of the game and with an eye for goal. Moreover, he is an expert in set-pieces and can link up very well with his teammates.

Surely, a player of Mooy’s ability would enhance West Ham’s quality in the midfield. The former Manchester City ace could turn out to be the perfect partner for Wilshere in advanced midfield, with Rice in a deeper role.

Hence, West Ham must do everything in their powers to sign Mooy from Huddersfield in January.
