Why Giles Barnes would be an unnecessary signing for West Brom

According to the Sun, West Bromwich Albion are interested in the signing of Jamaican international Giles Barnes who was part of the squad at the Hawthorns back in 2012 before his move to the MLS.

West Brom are having a spectacular season having already notched up 57 goals. They currently find themselves at 3rd place with just 4 points separating them from league leaders Leeds United. Still very much in the title picture, they should look for ways to solidify their defence in order to force the promotion issue.

While the attack has been very good, the defence has been quite questionable considering that have already conceded 35 goals in their 28 matches. With a pretty large chunk of the season still to go, with a defensive record like that, competing at the top level will be a very difficult task.

The recent early loan recall of Harvey Barnes has obviously affected this Albion side but the presence of players like Jay Rodriguez and Dwight Gayle should soften the blow and help them maintain composure.

While the window is still open, it would be very smart from Albion to try and play their hand in the transfer market to acquire a top-class defender who can strengthen their push for promotion. At the same time, purchasing a striker would be an utter waste of resources for the league’s highest scorers.

Reports from the Sun are suggesting that West Brom are considering offering former player Giles Barnes a contract to help out with their championship push. He is a 30-year-old Jamaican striker who came up through the Derby County ranks. He made 35 Premier League appearances when he was a part of the Derby side that gained promotion in the 2006/07 campaign.

Having spent a large amount of time playing for different teams in the MLS since moving away in 2012, he is currently out of contract at his former club and is training at the West Brom facility, which has triggered the links according to the Sun.

He is a striker who has developed into quite the player over the years but with a similar attacker like Gayle in hot form, it would be silly to purchase another player only to warm the bench.

Even without Gayle, Albion have enough firepower to beat most championship sides because of the sheer quality of their build-up play. With Robson-Kanu as a central option and a variety of wing players in their ranks, this move can be considered silly at best at a time when they should be desperate to repair what has been a leaky defence.
