All Is Well At The Emirates – 3 Reasons Why Arsenal Needs To Shut Shop During The January Window

Share

Having picked up just a point from the first two fixtures this season, Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal have made a tremendous comeback after the mediocre start, to pick up 30 points in the next 12 games, to stand at the 2nd place in the points table early in the month of December. The manager has been able to use a settled starting lineup for most games this season and though a few injuries have hampered their plans, Wenger will know that he has a squad capable of beating the best and will hope to keep their title chances alive and stay close to Chelsea at the top of the table. But with the January transfer window approaching, Wenger is looking at a few players to add to his squad but does he need them? Do Arsenal need any signings in January? Here are three reasons why they don’t:

Squad Depth:

Though the manager has been using a false-9 system, he has enough players in his squad to help him play any system at the club with the likes of Olivier Giroud and Lucas Perez waiting for their chances, while Danny Welbeck is also not too far away from recovery. Wenger purchased Lucas in the summer but has not given him enough chances to show what he is made up of while the likes of Aaron Ramsey and Oxlade-Chamberlain are patiently waiting for their turn. Alex Iwobi, Chuba Akpom (injured) and Yaya Sonogo (injured) are also there to provide depth to the squad. The manager has also used fringe players in the first team at times to shake things up and he has enough quality in his squad to go to even without adding players in January. So it will be important for Wenger to test all his squad out before plunging into the market.

Lack of Quality:

Like for any other club in January, Arsene Wenger will not be able to lure out his top transfer targets, midway through the season. Top European clubs, busy in their own campaigns, will not be ready to sell their players in the middle of the campaign and Wenger will have to settle for fringe players if he decides to splash the cash in January. Though Wenger might yet unearth a gem in the winter transfer window, chances are that he will have to do with a player who can help them and the manager is better advised to wait till the summer to add quality players who will make the squad better and not bigger.

The Inflation:

Though not an issue for the richest clubs in the world, it is something that will affect the manager at Arsenal. The Frenchman is not the kind of a man who likes to spend big and his January transfer window last season saw him add no player to his squad. Wenger hates to overspend on players and he will know that he will have to do that if he wants to add a star player to the squad in January. Arsenal have enough firepower in their squad to go all the way this season even without any addition and Wenger should only spend big bucks if he finds a player who can improve the squad immensely. Even his price will be over the top, leaving Wenger with little options. So Arsenal are better off without any transfer business in January.

Do you think Wenger will sign a player in January?
