Why Signing Leicester’s Andy King On Loan Is A Shrewd Move By Swansea

Leicester City midfielder Andy King completed a last-minute deadline day loan move to join Premier League strugglers Swansea City. The Welshman has been starved of game time ever since new manager Claude Puel took charge of Leicester, thus making the loan deal seem ideal for the player. He is in dire need of first-team action but despite spending almost a decade with the Foxes, he will now have to ply his trade elsewhere until the end of the season.

There is a new manager at Swansea as well and Carlos Carvalhal will be hoping that King addresses a lot of concerns in his squad. The Swans need goals and King is known to be a good influence in the midfield area to create chances. If King can get things going, there is no doubt that he could prove to be a valuable addition as the club tries hard to steer clear of the relegation zone and secure a higher-placed finish.

The 29-year-old was a part of Leicester’s fairytale triumph in the 2015/16 season and he has also helped the club survive relegation before. To that end, he seems to have the kind of experience needed to bring Swansea out of the bottom of the table but the player will need to wait a bit before he can step out in a Swansea jersey. Carvalhal’s men will face off against his parent club Leicester this weekend and he is not eligible to face his parent club.

However, when he comes on, it will be interesting to see how Carvalhal accommodates him in an already-congested midfield. Roque Mesa has been sent out on a loan spell to Sevilla and a player with King’s experience and skill can truly make an impact.

 

However, even with Mesa and Jay Fulton out, Carvalhal has plenty of options in the midfield at present. To be fair, it was rather strange to see that Swansea chose to sign King instead of making a move for an out-and-out attacker – a player who could actually go out and bag goals for them on any given day.

That said, there is no questioning King’s abilities. He has been pulling the strings in the Leicester midfield for years now and there is no reason why he cannot replicate the same for Swansea. He can play in a deeper role as well as in an advanced role and can slot right into the high-pressing game that Swansea played in their victories against Arsenal and Liverpool.

Moreover, the 29-year-old also boasts of this innate ability to sneak in a goal or two and that could ultimately help Carvalhal achieve what he wants. So while it remains to be seen how he fares at the Welsh club, there is no doubt that signing King on a temporary basis is a clever move by Carvalhal.
