One might have thought that Arsenal FC will find it hard to lure world-class players to the Emirates this summer, having failed to qualify for the Champions League. But Arsene Wenger who recently extended his contract with the club has managed to rope in one of the best left-backs in Europe.
The 23-year-old Sead Kolasinac joined Arsenal FC on a free transfer from FC Schalke after spending 5 years at the German club.
What makes Kolasinac special? Plenty to be precise. Standing at 1.83 metres tall, the young left-back is also physically strong, and would suit the demands of the Premier League very well. Kolasinac is also versatile, having played as a defensive midfielder as well as a centre-back for Schalke’s second team which makes him a useful asset.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international is far superior to his new competitors, Nacho Monreal and Kieran Gibbs, as he excels in the air and also in terms of timing when compared to both Gunners. Arsenal’s main problem has always been the space left behind the fullbacks which leaves the central defenders exposed to a counter attack. Kolasinac deals really well with one on one situations, often muscling off the opposition attackers with his strength, making him the perfect defender.
It’s not just his defensive capabilities that sets him apart from the rest but also his attacking intent as he loves to put in crosses with his left foot.
Although he is only 23 years of age, Kolasinac has plenty of experience on his side having spent 5 seasons in Schalke’s first team. The ageing Monreal and 27-year-old Gibbs have not done much to hold a permanent place in Wenger’s eleven and one of them could be well on their way out of the club (most probably Kieran Gibbs).
Kolasinac fits perfectly into Arsene Wenger’s new 3-4-3 system allowing him to make forward runs along with the speedy Hector Bellerin on the right. His ability to trackback makes it less worrying for Arsenal’s centre-backs.
Apart from Chelsea’s César Azpilicueta, the rest of the top 5 teams do not possess a world-class left-back in their ranks. Taking into account Azpilicueta’s age, Kolasinac proves to be the best in the League.
