Why Watford should have signed Emmanuel Adebayor on a free transfer

Watford have endured a woeful start to the new Premier League campaign and are the only team to have not picked up a single point after three games. That is despite the club spending good amount of money in the summer to produce a change from inside.

The pressure is indeed building on Javi Gracia following defeats to Brighton and Hove Albion, Everton and West Ham. Even though Watford defeated Coventry City in the Carabao Cup clash on Tuesday, they have to improve a lot if Gracia is to keep hold of his job.

The Hornets have been defensively woeful, leaking goals for fun. Gracia has made a huge mistake by bringing in only one central defender in Craig Dawson.

The Spanish tactician did address last season’s goalscoring problems by snapping up free agent Danny Welbeck. Considering Troy Deeney’s absence after knee surgery and the likes of Andre Gray and Isaac Success’ inconsistencies, however, Watford should’ve signed Emmanuel Adebayor.

Emmanuel Adebayor, 35, who was heavily linked with a move to Watford, became a free agent after leaving Istanbul Basaksehir in July by mutual consent. However, he has now signed for Turkish minnows Kayserispor.

Watford could have done a smart job by signing Adebayor. The Togolese has volumes of Premier League experience having turned out for clubs like Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and Crystal Palace.

He is now 35, past his prime but he could have been useful to Watford in many other ways. Gracia has Gerard Deulofeu, Roberto Pereyra, Troy Deeney, Ismaila Sarr, Danny Welbeck and Andre Gray; who provide different attacking threats and Adebayor would have been a fine addition to that.

Standing at 6ft 3in tall, Adebayor is excellent in the air and can play with his back to the goal. He likes to hold the ball up, bring his teammates into the game and arrive at the right place and at the right time to finish off moves.

The ex-Arsenal man is a real threat in the box and with the likes of Will Hughes, Gerard Deulofeu and Roberto Pereyra around him, the veteran marksman could have been a real asset to Gracia’s Watford.

Verdict

Adebayor would have arrived at Vicarage Road with plenty of Premier League experience, making him a wise investment for Gracia’s side. All in all, the Togolese’s acquisition on a free transfer could have potentially bolstered Watford’s hopes of achieving a top-ten finish this season.

Hence, the Hornets have made a huge blunder by not signing the 35-year-old striker.
