Derby County came from behind to stun Leeds United 4-2 in the second leg of the Championship playoff semifinal tie at Elland Road. The Rams eventually won the tie 4-3 to reach the final at Wembley on the 27th of May.
Being 1-0 up from the first leg, Marcelo Bielsa’s men took the lead on the night in the 24th minute when Stuart Dallas tapped in from close range after Liam Cooper had hit the bar with his header.
At the stroke of half-time, Frank Lampard’s men equalised on the night and halved the deficit on aggregate. It came about from a Leeds mistake as Kiko Casilla and Cooper mixed up a clearance, allowing Jack Marriot to score.
The away side turned the game on its head after the break. Mason Mount scored a minute into the second half when Harry Wilson assisted him for a shot at the top corner.
The tie turned in the 58th minute when Cooper fouled Mason Bennett in the box. Wilson stepped up to take the penalty and put the aggregate 3-2 in favour of Derby.
Four minutes later, parity was restored when Mateusz Klich found Dallas in the box to find the bottom right corner.
The match turned heavily when Gaetano Berardi was sent off for a second yellow card offence in the 78th minute. After that, Leeds tried to be positive on the ball but Derby seemed to have the advantage.
That advantage was made to count in the 85th minute when Richard Keogh on a mazy run from centre-back and found the run of Marriott. The striker then timed his dink finish superbly well to once again put the away side ahead on aggregate.
After that, even though Scott Malone got himself sent off in the dying embers of the game, Derby had enough men behind to protect the lead and reach the final of the playoffs. They are one win away from Premier League football.
