Two Things Arsene Wenger Needs To Do This Summer For Arsenal To Challenge For The Title

Share

Arsenal’s season so far has not been very impressive, they are 5th in the Premier League table and also after some hardship in the group stages they went through to the Champions League round of 16. But according to the opinion of majority of the fans and experts Arsenal’s struggle during the season is majorly because of unsuccessful transfer window. This season during the summer window Wenger splashed a lot of cash in buying players and those players were Alexis Sanchez, Calum Chambers, Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Danny Welbeck. While in the January window they signed a 24-year old Brazilian defender Gabriel Paulista from Villarreal. Even after buying these many players the Gunners are struggling to find stability and Wenger needs to fill some unavoidable voids in the Arsenal squad and the summer window is the right time to do that.

Let us now understand which players Arsenal should sign in the upcoming summer window in order to make the team a little bit more competitive.

Sign A World Class Defensive Midfielder

After the downfall of Arteta and Flamini the first to do in Arsene’s notepad was to sign a world class defensive midfielder as soon as possible, but unfortunately Wenger couldn’t sign one in the summer or January window and this mistake caused many upsets this season for Arsenal. For instance the match between Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates where Arsenal players left a big gap between the midfield and defense which led to many United attacks and also the reason behind the goals which Arsenal conceded.

Arsenal are now using Francis Coquelin in that position as a temporary solution. However, a world class defensive midfielder will add more stability in the squad and also will give freedom to the attacking midfielders like Ramsey and Ozil to do their things. Many midfielders were linked to Arsenal in the January window and some of them were Sami Khedira, Joao Moutinho, Morgan Schneiderlin etc. As of now no CDM is linked with a move to Arsenal for the summer window but let’s see what happens in the future.

Sign A Versatile Center Back

Arsenal’s defense is currently filled with some great players like Koscielny, Mertesacker, Gibbs, Monreal, Debuchy, Bellerin, Chambers and Paulista. But this defense has many weaknesses which can be easily exploited by any strong team and hence in order to tackle these problems Wenger should sign a versatile defender to pair with either Koscielny or Mertesacker. The weakness in Mertesacker is his speed, which makes him a real liability against fast paced-counter attacking teams. Although he has what it takes to win the aerial duels, decent standing tackles, brilliant reading and awareness on the pitch. While the problem with Laurent is he is a very error prone defender, who is very likely to get into trouble or commit a foul, otherwise he is a perfect defender. A versatile defender or to be more precise, a defender who can directly give competition to Arsenal’s first choice players is what the Gunners need in order to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.
