Transfer Mistakes: (Top) 5 Players Sold Early By Manchester United In The Premier League

Share

Manchester United and more important Louis van Gaal has come under criticism not only for the performances of the club but also for the way the club have dealt in the transfer window. United have spent more than £250 million in three transfer windows but haven’t really gotten any players who have provided some great performances.

Transfers are some of the toughest things in the world of football and more often than not, you do not get the right performance early on at the start of a player’s career. With Manchester United struggling at the moment with their transfers, we look back at five players who were sold too soon during their careers at Manchester United.

5. Carlos Tevez

One of the best players to have played in the Premier League, the Argentine moved to Manchester United from West Ham United but after a loan deal for a couple of years, a final fee to be paid for the services of the Argentine could not take place.

Tevez didn’t hesitate and moved to their bitter rivals, who were growing in stature, Manchester City and helped them to a Premier League title but then had another spectacular fallout with then manager Roberto Mancini, nevertheless, the work rate and quality that Tevez provided was second to none and surely United could have done with his services.

4. Angel Di Maria

This might be a bit of a 50-50, Di Maria didn’t really do much for Manchester United during his one and only year at the club, but he did start his career really well. Unfortunately, he was working under Louis van Gaal and that didn’t really help much.

Di Maria was shipped off to PSG where he has found his scoring boots and has done well for the Ligue 1 club. A Real Madrid star couldn’t perform at Manchester United or was it that he wasn’t given the room and space to perform under Van Gaal, we will probably never know.

3. Giuseppe Rossi

Rossi’s career couldn’t take off all that well due to injuries but when he is fit, he is lethal. Manchester United had signed then a 17-year-old from Parma but he was loaned out to many clubs, including Newcastle. After moving to Villareal in 2007, he got goal scoring and boy was he scoring a lot.

He scored 32 goals in 56 appearances for Villareal in 2010-11, his best return and had he been kept at Manchester United, he could well have scored a bucket load of goals with another star at the club, Wayne Rooney.

2. Gerard Pique

Pique turned out to be one of the greatest defenders in the history of Barcelona, but he was a Manchester United player before his move to the Nou Camp. There were two players at the same stage of their career and Ferguson decided to stick with Evans and let Pique join his beloved Barcelona.

We all know how Pique developed at his boyhood club and how many laurels he has already won and will probably win for a couple of years more. Just think what he could have done had he remained at Manchester United.

  1. Jaap Stam

It must have been a huge error in judgement from Sir Alex Ferguson if he does admit that a transfer didn’t go down too well. Stam was coming back from an injury and Manchester United did get a great deal for a 29-year-old from Italian club Lazio.

Stam though put up great performances at the Italian club and could have helped Manchester United stay stable at the back. The Dutch defender certainly was one of the best defenders in the world even after his time at United and could have given them a lot more had he stayed at the club.
