Things have swiftly changed for Tottenham Hotspur in just a matter of couple of weeks.
Tottenham were 10 points ahead of Arsenal in the midst of February, eyeing the title rather than merely Champions League qualification. But after two successive defeats against Burnley and Chelsea and a 1-1 stalemate in the North London derby last weekend, Spurs are now looking over their shoulder, with fourth-place Manchester United closing in.
Tottenham just haven’t floundered in the league of late, they also got knocked out of the EFL Cup and the FA Cup in February. The pressure is on Mauricio Pochettino to deliver silverware after being at the club’s helm since 2014 but as things stand, the Champions League remains Tottenham’s only chance of winning a trophy this season.
Realistically speaking, winning the Champions League would need a big squad and Pochettino doesn’t have that luxury. He has worked wonders on a tight budget ever since arriving in north London but it’s time for Spurs to back the Argentine manager with a big summer transfer kitty.
One area Pochettino should focus addressing is the midfield, with a replacement for Mousa Dembele desperately needed ahead of the next season. Keeping that in mind, Tottenham should make a move for Atalanta star Marten de Roon.
Tottenham have lacked creativity in the middle of the park and are in need of someone who would be a driving force with box-to-box movements. Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier are suited to a holding role, while Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko are good ball-carriers.
But Spurs require a player with the mix of defensive diligence and dynamism and Marten de Roon would fit the bill perfectly.
De Roon, 27, has been an ever-present in the Atalanta side this season, impressing with his displays in the middle of the park. The Dutchman has enjoyed a solid season thus far, with Atalanta being the second highest scorer in the Serie A.

Calm and composed on the ball, the 27-year-old has a good technique and a passing range which helps him pick a pass. De Roon is a tireless runner, covers a lot of ground and his energy combined with his ball-playing abilities make him a such a crucial player to have in the team.
Nicknamed ‘The Wavebreaker’, De Roon would bring a lot of energy and thrust to the Spurs’ midfield. He is well-versed with Premier League football having spent a season with Middlesbrough although the Teessiders ended up in relegation.
Therefore, Spurs should not hesitate to splash the cash on the Dutch ace, who could represent a fantastic Dembele replacement.
