Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are two of the most exciting sides in the Premier League at the moment. While both teams have a similar attack that can destroy opponents, Liverpool are far behind Tottenham in the defensive areas.
The Spurs are currently one of the best defences in England’s top flight and are placed 2nd in the points table. Liverpool, on the other hand, are conceding too many goals and they have a lot to improve on. Both teams have some solid shot-stoppers for their clubs. Hugo Lloris, the first-choice French international has been impeccable at the back for Tottenham, while Belgian star Mignolet has found some decent form after a series of bad displays in the last couple of years. So who is a better goalkeeper? Here is a statistical comparison between the two:
While Lloris plays behind one of the most consistent defences in the league, Mignolet plays for a club that is struggling to keep teams away from their goal. Spurs have conceded just 20 goals all season compared to 30 by Liverpool. Lloris has kept 14 clean sheets having played 5 games more than Mignolet while the Belgian at Anfield has just 5 clean sheets to his name.
Lloris has also been proactive and has made a number of game-saving stops this season. He has 52 saves to his name, which is 2.74 saves per goal conceded – right up there with the best in the league. Mignolet has been criticised constantly for the lack of effort in front of goal and he has made just 39 saves at 1.30 stops per goal conceded.
One of the major reasons for Spurs’ success this season has been the confidence of their French shot-stopper. Lloris has a distribution accuracy of 75%, which is astonishing for a goalkeeper. Comparing that to Simon Mignolet’s 66%, makes it all the more impressive.
However, Mignolet has had his own effect at the back. He has tried to dominate his area more than he usually does and has made 17 punches to go with 52 catches this season. Lloris is more often than not, has been happy to leave this job to his defence and has made just 8 punches all season. However, he also has 52 catches to his name this campaign.
Both players are playing for clubs with different sets of defenders who have been at the opposite ends of the spectrum. While Liverpool have struggled at the back, Tottenham have been solid, and this fact is quite clear from the stats of both their shot stoppers.
