Why Tottenham should go all out for Jack Grealish in January

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Juventus consider Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen as their top target for the summer transfer window.

Despite less than 12 months remaining on Christian Eriksen’s contract, Spurs were unable to attract a suitable offer before September 2, increasing the likelihood of the player leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season.

If the 27-year-old does not agree on fresh terms with the North London club, he will be able to reach a pre-contract agreement with a foreign team. Juventus are continuing to monitor the situation ahead of a potential approach at the beginning of 2020, the report adds.

Christian Eriksen, 27, hasn’t quite got the game time that he would have liked so far this season. The Dane has managed just one goal and one assist in nine games across all competitions so far this season and isn’t hitting the heights he is capable of.

If the Denmark international doesn’t agree to a new deal, Tottenham must cash in on him in January. With the money they receive from his sale, Tottenham must aim to sign Aston Villa skipper, Jack Grealish.

Jack Grealish, 24, was close to joining Tottenham last summer before Aston Villa’s new majority owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens blocked the move.

He was expected to be sold because of the Midlands club’s financial issues under former owner Dr Tony Xia, however, the midfielder stayed at Villa Park and signed a new five-year deal.

Grealish went on to play a huge role in Villa’s promotion in May. He hit six goals for the Villans last season, leading the team from the front under the management of Dean Smith. In the Premier League, the 24-year-old has so far managed two assists in seven games as the Villans lie in the relegation zone.

It’s difficult to imagine Smith’s Aston Villa selling Grealish in January, especially given that his team could be embroiled in a relegation battle. Yet, Spurs should test the Midlands club’s resolve with an audacious bid.

Grealish can’t boss the midfield in the Premier League the same way he did in the second division. However, his play has been so good this season for Villa that it makes it clear that he can jump up and handle things at a bigger club like Tottenham. He possesses the ability to glide past defenders, create and find the back of the net.

Verdict

Replacing Eriksen would be an uphill task for Pochettino considering the Dane’s quality and experience. Grealish is a different player to Eriksen but he is someone Pochettino can definitely develop into a superstar.
