Tottenham Opinion: Spurs should go all out to sign Carlos Soler

Back in January, ESPN claimed Tottenham were plotting a £30million summer swoop for Valencia’s Carlos Soler.

The Spaniard, 22, enjoyed a strong season with Valencia, scoring two goals and supplying seven assists in 31 league games. He was massively involved under manager Marcelinho, playing a key role in Valencia’s Champions League qualification.

After enjoying a highly productive campaign at the Mestalla, Carlos Soler might cost a bit but the North London outfit must not hesitate to splash the cash on the 22-year-old midfielder this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino has not signed a player for Spurs since capturing Lucas Moura from Paris Saint-Germain during the 2018 winter window.

A lack of strength in the squad affected Spurs’ 2018/19 Premier League campaign and Pochettino cannot afford to repeat the same mistake again. He must persuade the board to invest heavily over the summer.

Solving the midfield conundrum has to be the Spurs manager’s priority, with the likes of Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier enduring injury-hit campaigns.

Moussa Sissoko was the only standout performer in the middle of the park for Pochettino’s side, and Spurs lacked balance at times in the engine room.

Carlos Soler could be the answer to Spurs’ problems in the midfield. Predominantly a right-sided midfielder, he operated as a central defensive midfielder for Valencia this past season.

The Spaniard is an excellent distributor of the ball from the middle of the park and is equally efficient in breaking up the play with his tackling skills. He is a very good passer, knows to keep the ball under pressure and release the ball to break the opponents’ defensive line.

Despite being only 22 years old, the youngster possesses excellent tactical awareness. He has the tendency to make runs into the box and find the back of the net, although Soler is not a consistent goalscorer. His strengths lie in dribbling, crossing and ability to recycle possession with the utmost ease.

The Spanish midfielder is also good from dead-ball situations, something which could be very useful for Spurs. Soler’s style of play is exactly what will help the likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Son Heung-min thrive even more in the final third of the pitch.

A silky operator, the 22-year-old would undoubtedly help Tottenham improve the fluidity of their play in the middle.

If Spurs are to sign anyone this summer, Soler is the chief candidate who can boost their hopes of challenging for the Premier League title and other trophies next season.
