Why Tottenham Must Beat Arsenal To Sign This £38 Serie A Star

Tottenham fans are still finding it hard to believe that their team bottled it again during the final phase of the last season. It’s a habit which has plagued Tottenham in recent years and has resulted in them missing out on Champions League on a number of occasions. Mauricio Pochettino has done a excellent job at White Hart Lane since he shifted from Southampton. His team has the right combination of experience and youth with great talented players in almost every position. However there has still quite a few gaps in the squad that need to be filled if they are going to mount a serious title challenge next season.

Pochettino’s desperate search for a new centre-forward goes on and on and a name that has made the Argentine’s wish list lately is Inter Milan attacker Mauro Icardi. It has been reported that Spurs are willing to pay £38m to get the Argentine striker to North London. The Italian team has rubbished any rumours linking the striker with a move away.

It is felt that a fee of close to £40m will likely have to be offered to lure Icardi away from the Italian capital, while Atletico Madrid and rivals Arsenal are also thought to have shown an interest in the talented attacker. Icardi has himself made it clear he wants to remain with the Nerazzurri, and it appears the club share his outlook after turning down an offer of just under €50 million from Atletico Madrid.

Spurs are looking to add some depth and quality to their forward lineup, as Harry Kane is their only recognized striker and Champions League football is just around the corner. One of the game’s top No. 9s, Mauro Icardi is aggressive, snarling, ferocious and powerful, all excellent traits in a player capable of leading the line by himself. He’s pretty handy with his movement and finishing too. The striker won’t come cheap, however he is someone who can guarantee goals with his talent.

After an impressive Serie A debut season in 2012-13 with Sampdoria, the 23-year-old was bought by Inter for around €11.7 million. The talismanic striker has scored 52  goals in 102 appearances in his three seasons with Inter and since moving to the Blue side of the San Siro in 2013, the former Barcelona youth product has gone from strength to strength to become one of the best young strikers in the world.

If Pochettino does manage to get the striker this summer, he could a long way in solving Tottenham’s striker crisis. There is already a hint that Harry Kane is suffering from fatigue after two seasons of leading the line for Tottenham. It is imperative that the manager gets in a striker who can compliment Kane and provide able cover for him.
