Why Tottenham have done the right thing by keeping hold of Danny Rose

According to a report from the Independent, Tottenham’s Danny Rose had emerged as a shock transfer deadline target for Watford. However, Spurs rejected Watford‘s £14m bid for their defender.

Danny Rose, 29, has been left in limbo after seemingly heading out of Tottenham earlier in the transfer window. He was omitted from Tottenham’s pre-season tour squad last month.

Rumours surrounding his transfer have gone quiet and he’s now set to remain in North London. And the left-back could be just as important as any addition that Mauricio Pochettino’s side made this summer.

Spurs were very active in the transfer market after previously failing to land a single player since January 2018. Tanguy Ndombele has arrived from Lyon, while Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon were both snapped up on the deadline day from Real Betis and Fulham respectively.

Pochettino has built a squad capable of challenging the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title in the upcoming campaign. And keeping hold of Rose is the perfect decision taken by the Tottenham tactician.

Rose was one of the team’s best players during the latter stages of the Champions League last term, proving he still is capable of thriving in Pochettino’s pressing system, regardless of turning 29.

The Yorkshire man is no longer the same player as a few seasons ago but the last term, he did show signs of getting back to somewhere near his best.

The England international remains one of the finest left-backs in the Premier League and if Spurs had sold him, they simply would have put new signing Ryan Sessegnon to immediately make an impact in the first team.

Sessegnon is a young, dynamic and talented player but he could take time to adapt to Pochettino’s system at Spurs. The teenager certainly has a very bright future ahead of him and he could unlock his true potential under the watchful eyes of Pochettino. Ben Davies, meanwhile, has signed a new contract last month and is a solid back-up option to have in the squad.

Rose has proven himself to be tough to beat defensively and also an attacking threat when marauding forward with pace and energy. He is undoubtedly better than the likes of Davies and Sessegnon at the moment of time.

Verdict

The flying left-back has been a key performer during his time in north London and been an ever-present under Pochettino. Thus, retaining Rose’s services is one of the best decisions Pochettino has taken ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
