Torres could be on his way out, says former Chelsea striker

The Chelsea fans have been more patient with Torres than they’ve ever been with anyone else in their history; for that matter they were more patient than any English club in the recent times. But they finally reached their saturation point during the Capital One (League) Cup semi-final first leg defeat by Swansea City when the fans had enough of a lackluster performance by Torres. 

“Torres was poor,” former Ireland and Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino told Sky Sports News on Thursday. “As the game wore on he looked like a guy who had run out of confidence.

“He looks like he’s playing with a bit of fear in his game and you can’t have that.”

Torres gave the fans a small glimmer of hope that he could be back to his best after joining Chelsea from Liverpool in January 2011 on many occasions. But 1 good performance by him was always followed by another poor run. 

Chelsea had Drogba during Torres’ first one and a half years at the club so they were happy giving him as much time as possible. But with the departure of Drogba, Torres was the main striker for this season and it’s fair to say the only striker for the Blues till December.

The entire team was built/bought in his favor. Chelsea bought players who could support him. In fact Chelsea also got an interim manager to help Torres out. Yet he continues to disappoint. He has failed to reproduce the form that netted him 81 goals in 142 games for Liverpool, including 33 in his first season, but the Stamford Bridge faithful never wavered in their support until now.

Chelsea’s new striker Demba Ba, signed from Newcastle United last week, hit two goals on his debut in a 5-1 FA Cup third-round win over Southampton on Saturday and the crowd repeatedly sang his name during Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat by Swansea.

“We want Demba Ba,” the fans chanted before interim manager Rafael Benitez finally relented and introduced the Senegal international in the 81st minute to replace the beleaguered Torres.

All does not look well for Torres and his career at Chelsea could end sooner than later and this can also have significant influence on his selection for the Spanish Nation Team.
