This game week might have seen its fair share of goals with Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham scoring four goals, but there certainly were some great defensive performances which helped teams like Sunderland and Stoke City to keep clean sheets and pick up important victories.

Tackling is just one of the art forms in the game which doesn’t get enough credit while Lionel Messi and Ronaldo bag the goals; there is always a Gerard Pique who does his bit to ensure his team are ahead in the game.

We look back at this game week and list out the top five tacklers in the Premier League thanks to stats from Squawka.com.

Sebastian Coates – Sunderland

Sam Allardyce might have thought about his record of staying up in the Premier League after he took over the job at Sunderland, but the Black Cats won a tough encounter against Southampton, thanks to a great defensive showing from the much maligned Sebastian Coates. The Uruguayan won five tackles and six aerial duels as he helped his team keep a clean sheet away from home.

Billy Jones – Sunderland

Another Black Cat is on the list, this time it is Billy Jones who was just as good as Coates in keeping Southampton quiet. The defender had six successful tackles during the game and also won a couple of aerial duels to ensure that Sam Allardyce gets another three points as the team inches its way closer to safety.

Winston Reid – West Ham

Although the Hammers were outclassed by a great Tottenham team in the London derby, Winston Reid did have a decent game. He won six tackles during the 90 minutes at White Hart Lane and also notched up a couple of aerial duel wins for the Hammers. Hopefully, he can turn things around for the team in their next game this weekend.

N’Golo Kante – Leicester

The French midfielder at Leicester might have been an unknown name at the start of the season but the fairy-tale continues for the Foxes. They won 3-0 away at St James’ park with Jamie Vardy scoring again, but Kante did his bit in midfield by winning eight tackles against the Magpies and also winning a couple of aerial duels in the game to make the list.

James Miner – Liverpool

One of the stars, well almost everyone was a star for Liverpool in their win over Manchester City; Milner was excellent for Liverpool in midfield and attack. The former Manchester City player notched up 8 tackles in the game; the highest tied with Kante of Leicester but also had four aerial duel wins. He finally is showing what his capability is under Jurgen Klopp; Liverpool fans have more reasons to cheer now.
