Top 5 game-changing signings completed by Celtic in the last decade including 73-goal star

Share

It never hurts to be nostalgic, and Celtic fans have a lot to be nostalgic about, having won eight Scottish Championship titles, four Scottish Cups and four Scottish League Cups in the last decade.

Here are the five best signings Celtic made in that period:

Scott Brown

Brown has been an ever-present for Celtic since joining the club from Hibernian in 2007. He really epitomises what it means to be a Celtic player.

He has been the captain of the Hoops since 2010 and is most likely to keep the arm-band for years to come. The Scot has amassed 472 appearances in all competitions for Celtic, scoring 37 times and setting up 58 goals.

Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk became the most expensive defender in the world after completing his transfer from Southampton to Liverpool in January. But Celtic were the team to take a gamble on him and bring him to the UK back in 2013.

He had two fantastic years with the Hoops before moving to Southampton. Besides helping Celtic’s defence, he scored nine goals in 76 appearances for the clubs, including a couple of cracking free-kicks. The Dutchman helped Celtic to win two league titles and a Scottish League Cup.

Victor Wanyama

Another fantastic discovery from Celtic, they acquired the Kenyan from Belgian outfit Beerschot AC in the summer of 2011.

He put in several impressive displays in the middle of the park for the Bhoys and helped them to two league titles and a Scottish Cup before moving to Southampton in 2013. The defensive midfielder, who currently plays for Tottenham Hotspur, also has 50 caps and a goal for Kenya to his name.

Craig Gordon

Gordon is currently Celtic’s number one between the sticks. The custodian picked up some nasty injuries during the latter part of his spell at Sunderland. But he recovered from those injuries and joined Celtic in 2014. He hasn’t looked back and has become a key player for the Scottish giants.

Leigh Griffiths

Another player who joined Celtic in 2014 was Griffiths. He has an incredible 73 goals in 119 games in all competitions for Celtic in 119 performances and it really is a wonder that he hasn’t been looked at by Premier League clubs.

Griffiths, Brown and Gordon are the spine that the current Hoops team are built upon, and they were all essential signings.
