Top 3 Defenders This Season (EPL) With Stats Including Arsenal, Chelsea And Liverpool Stars

Share

With just nine gameweeks in this tipsy-topsy Premier League campaign, the fight for the title is expected to go down to the wire. Chelsea’s shock defeat to Aston Villa blew open the title race while Liverpool and Manchester City continued their surge towards the zenith of the table. Today however, we provide our readers with three of the best defenders who have been exceptional at the back this season and try to figure out a comparison based on stats.

3. Gary Cahill:

The former Bolton man has been ever present in Mourinho’s backline and together with John Terry has kept an enviable 12 clean sheets this campaign. Calm and composed in possession, Cahill rarely makes a defensive mistake winning a staggering 70% of his duels head on. Moreover he always has the eye for a pass enabling Chelsea to play out from the back. With 87% pass completion rate and 185 clearances this season, Cahill will spearhead England’s charge in World Cup in Brazil. Talking of stats, the Chelsea man has earned only one red card and 2 yellow cards in the process. Easily, makes his way in our list for the best defender contender award for the season.

2. Martin Skrtel:

The Slovakian has been at the heart of the Liverpool defense and any talks of him not being brave or good enough for the Reds has been squashed by his display over the course of the season. The iron man as he is called in the Red half of Merseyside has made a staggering 1031 successful passes in the season, a large number for a defender. But his tackling lets him time and again giving away cheap fouls and has this poor habit of pulling the opposition player’s shirt during set pieces giving away penalties. However, Skrtel has made 346 clearances and 52 interceptions also has bagged 6 crucial goals for the Reds.

3. Laurent Koscielny:

Even though Arsenal’s season is going from bad to worse, Frenchman Laurent Koscielny has been pivotal in Arsenal’s charge this campaign. A brilliant one on one defender, with a no nonsense approach, Koscielny with his defensive partner, Per Mertesacker have always alert to the danger. With a total of 20 key blocks in the season, the Frenchman has helped his team bag 12 clean sheets and he individually wins 57% of his duels and has just lost 28 tackles winning 41 of them. Koscielny however provides enormous value to Arsene Wenger with his superb pace and also boasts of a 93% pass successful rate. The French star is one of the best defenders this season without a shade of doubt.
