Tips to Gerrard: 3 Players he should axe from the Rangers line-up this summer

Steven Gerrard has been an absolutely fascinating appointment at Rangers – relatively inexperienced at senior management level but a legend of the game with bags of potential to grow. It will be great to sit back as a neutral and see how Rangers grow from here.

The goal, as always at Rangers, will be to mount a challenge for the title, to try and disrupt the dominance of Celtic and bring some silverware back to the Ibrox. The club surely needs to recruit new players but to bring people in, Gerrard will need to move some of the deadwood on. Here are three players who he should offload in the summer.

Bruno Alves

A player with bags and bags of experience but Alves hasn’t quite settled down in Scotland. He has made 17 appearances over the course of the season but Gerrard must look to youth to build a side that would be his own.

It is unlikely that Alves will fit into his blueprint. They are unlikely to get much of a fee for him but just getting his wages off the books could free up some money for a Gerrard signing to take his place.

There were very strong rumours that Rangers had cut a deal with Benevento for the defender but time will tell whether this still goes through after the managerial change.

Eduardo Herrera

The 29-year-old only joined Rangers last summer but he has not performed well enough to force his way into the starting line-up. He has had to settle for cameo performances from the bench and only has 1 goal from those 18 times he has come on.

Gerrard will most likely be looking for a striker that can make a real difference when brought on and unfortunately, Herrera just doesn’t seem to be that sort of player. They should be able to recoup a little of the fee they paid as he had a good reputation before this season.

Kenny Miller

The veteran striker was banned by the club after his confrontation with former manager Graeme Murty. He hasn’t featured for the club in a very long time and made 23 appearances before the ban. He’s contributed 5 goals and 5 assists and it’s not a bad return for a player of his age.

Nevertheless, at 38, I think Rangers would be better off letting Miller leave at the end of the season. His contract expires at the end of the season and I don’t think he deserves an extension.
