Three Reasons Why Wolves Should Sign Diogo Jota On A Permanent Basis In January

Diogo Jota has been a sensation in the Championship since arriving on loan from Atletico Madrid in the summer, and now manager Nuno Espirito Santo is looking to make the deal permanent by the end of Janaury.

Here are three specific reasons why Wolves should act quickly and nail down a deal for the Portuguese forward before next summer:

His Attacking Prowess

Even when a player may be valuable, such as Middlesbrough’s Britt Assombalonga, or have a huge reputation such as former Leeds man Chris Wood, there is no guarantee of a forward being prolific until you have them in your side.

Jota, despite starting wide on the left most of the time and in a team which hasn’t always been scoring high in getting to top spot in the league, has hit 7 goals and 1 assist in 12 Championship matches so far. That is hugely valuable in this division and can be the difference between promotion and failure.

His Potential

Diogo Jota is just 20 years old and so whatever he achieves this season is nothing compared to the level he will reach in a few years time.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have proper ambition and wish to not only win this league, but to establish themselves as a top half Premier League side. In order to achieve that in the modern game, average Premier League players are no longer good enough and instead clubs need to be laden with international quality.

Jota is very well on the road to achieving such a status and so if Wolves don’t nail him down now then they will be left looking on in jealousy in two year’s time when he bangs in 20 Premier League goals for a Liverpool or an Arsenal.

His Future Value

There are two sides to this; should Wolves not quite reach all their targets over the next couple of years then they could end up in financial dire straits. They have invested heavily and quickly since the end of last season but no club is truly free to do that these days without consequences.

If Wolves struggle this time next season, a Diogo Jota in their squad permanently could be worth £20m-£30m and would be a very saleable asset indeed. There is a flip-side to that coin too though. Should they not complete this transfer by January and the player goes on to prove himself the best player in this league, then the price they are quoted by Atletico Madrid in the summer will be very much more than the one they would pay in January.

So a January deal for Diogo Jota would be a wise move by Wolves.
