Three midfielders Tottenham should look to sign in January – including this Mexican World Cup ace

Three midfielders Tottenham Hotspur should consider signing in January

Tottenham Hotspur may have enjoyed their best league start in the club’s history, but they have looked far from convincing.

No signings in the summer transfer window have seriously impacted the club, with Mauricio Pochettino having to work on with the same squad of last season. However, Tottenham Hotspur remain well in the title race as they currently find themselves in the fifth spot, just five points behind league leaders, Manchester City.

But in order to realistically challenge for the title, Pochettino needs to strengthen his squad in January.

The Argentine tactician has to freshen up his squad so that he can challenge for some silverware this campaign. One area he should definitely target is the midfield, with Mousa Dembele out of contract at the end of the campaign and Victor Wanyama battling with injury problems for over a year now.

Keeping that in mind, here are three midfielders Spurs should look to sign when the transfer window re-opens.

  1. Hector Herrera (FC Porto)

Hector Herrera is currently under contract at FC Porto but he will be a free agent next summer, meaning he could be available in a cut-price deal in January.

The 28-year-old starred during this summer’s World Cup in Russia and started in all three group games as Mexico secured their passage into the knockout stages. He has represented his country 70 times and would no doubt provide a wealth of experience to the Spurs side.

A tireless classic box-to-box midfielder blessed with technical ability and game-reading skills, Herrera would be a perfect fit for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

  1. Marcelo Brozovic (Inter Milan)

Inter Milan midfield ace Marcelo Brozovic was part of the Croatia squad that reached the 2018 World Cup final in Russia, only to lose at the hands of France.

Versatile enough to operate either in the centre of the park or as a No.10 – and even as a wide player on the right – Brozovic will provide options across the pitch for the manager. He is equally adept at breaking opposition’s play as well as creating opportunities for his team with his fantastic distribution skills.

At 25, Brozovic could be viewed as a long-term replacement for the ageing Dembele and Spurs would definitely benefit from signing him in January.

  1. Abdoulaye Doucoure (Watford)

Abdoulaye Doucoure has impressed in the Premier League ever since signing for Watford in 2016.

Doucoure has proven to be a solid box-to-box midfielder with strength and athleticism in Watford colours. He is known for his pace and eagerness to bring the ball forward as well as being capable of breaking up opposition attacks with his tough tackling and starting his team’s attacks.

The Frenchman has also a habit of scoring important goals from the midfield, making him a superb option for Spurs to consider in January.
