Why Madger Gomes Could Become Integral For Leeds In The Future

Leeds United have moved to sign young Spanish midfield player Madger Gomes on a permanent deal until 2020, following his recent release from Premier League Liverpool.

The player, who has played for Spain’s under-18’s but also qualifies for Guinea-Bissau, arrives at Elland Road having spent three years on Merseyside. He came to England from La Liga’s Villarreal, though he failed to make a first team appearance for the Reds after the move.

Gomes will first join Leeds’ under-23 set-up and look to impress before potentially stepping up to first team duties.  The 20-year-old already seems determined to get himself into new boss Thomas Christensen’s first team squad as early as possible.

Opportunities are bound to arise in pre-season for Gomes to play alongside established squad members at Leeds and a couple of good performances early on can go a long way towards pushing him up the ladder.

Just like in any workplace, people of a similar age tend to have plenty in common and work well together. The fact that Leeds have a renowned academy and are already relying on the likes of Ronaldo Vieira and Kemar Roofe means it shouldn’t be too long before we see Gomes join them on first team duty.

Leeds are definitely building for the future and that is good to see, given that most clubs in their situation concentrate only on trying to get out of the Championship with no thought given to the following few seasons.

Despite the impending loss of Charlie Taylor for the forthcoming season, Leeds have Hadi Sacko, Alfonso Pedraza, and Kalvin Phillips as well as the aforementioned Roofe and Vieira who are all under 24 years of age, and also as confirmed regular first team squad members.

Add to this, up and coming talent such as Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Tyler Denton, and Lewie Coyle and its clear Leeds have a bright enough future before any signings are even made. If they can supplement these with the right experienced performers, then the mix is certainly right for Leeds to go on and get back to the level we all visualise them at; the upper reaches of the Premier League.

Madger Gomes has a very bright future and, despite the disappointment of his release from Liverpool, he appears to be happy and determined to succeed in English football over the coming years. You would like to think that by the second half of the season, he will have broken into the first team set up, next to Vieira, in what could be a young but formidable engine room for the West Yorkshire side.
