Tottenham Opinion: Why Ryan Sessegnon would be a top signing for Spurs?

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham are confident of signing Fulham starlet Ryan Sessegnon this summer.

Spurs’ interest dates back for over a year in the England youngster, but there is still one factor that affects the teenager’s move to North London—both clubs being able to agree on a fee. Fulham value Ryan Sessegnon at £45m, but Spurs feel he is only worth £25m.

With Fulham planning for life in the Championship next season, they want to keep hold of their best players and in the process have offered a bumper new contract to Sessegnon, who has also attracted interest from Borussia Dortmund, the report adds.

Sessegnon, 19, has been coveted by some of the Premier League’s top clubs since his fantastic 2017/18 season in the Championship. Having enjoyed a taste of Premier League football, the 19-year-old has decided to move on and a transfer to Tottenham this summer would be ideal.

Mauricio Pochettino is close to signing his first player after the 2018 January transfer window in Leeds United’s Jack Clarke. Tottenham are keen to strengthen their squad as Pochettino looks to go one better than last season when the North Londoners reached the Champions League final, only to lose at the hands of Liverpool.

Reinforcements are needed this summer that would make Pochettino’s team capable of competing with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title. After completing the signing of Jack Clarke, Pochettino must shift his focus towards strengthening his defence.

Danny Rose is unsure regarding his future at Spurs and has even gone on to claim earlier this month that the club may want to cash in on him this summer. The England international has been an invaluable member of the Tottenham defence when fully fit and on form, and was a key figure for the club last season, managing 37 appearances across all competitions.

Meanwhile, Ben Davies is also on the Spurs’ books but he isn’t as aggressive and athletic as Rose. Yet, the Welshman is a decent left-back and must be kept in the team. If Pochettino decides to cash in on Rose this summer, Sessegnon would be the best choice to replace the Doncaster-born defender.

Sessegnon is a technically gifted winger, who can also play left-back. Like Rose, he’s an excellent athlete but one who would offer more in the final third. His pace, energy, trickery and crossing abilities would make him an asset at Spurs. The 19-year-old’s recovery pace and tenacious tackling also make him a solid player defensively.

Nevertheless, there are certain areas—both defensively and offensively—the England youth international needs to improve upon. Under Pochettino, Sessegnon could become a well-rounded player and having a mentor in Ben Davies would also be beneficial in his development.

Verdict

All in all, a move to Tottenham would be perfect for Sessegnon to develop and unlock his true potential.
