Why Tottenham should sign Divock Origi from Liverpool

According to a report in Express (h/t Telegraph), Tottenham Hotspur are considering signing Liverpool striker Divock Origi in this month’s transfer window. It can be partly attributed to the fact that Harry Kane is injured and won’t return until March.

Furthermore, the loss of Son Heung-Min for a month as he fulfils his national duties may have pushed the club to sign a striker.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men are currently competing in all four competitions and the last thing they needed was their main players missing a good chunk of games. They have Fernando Llorente to lead the line but it is evident that the Spaniard offers something contradictory to how the team plays.

The manager has an option of curbing his style of play to accommodate the former Juventus target man. He can do that by playing a different formation, say a 4-1-4-1, and bring width to the team to enable crosses into the box for the 33-year-old to attack.

The other alternative would be to buy a striker, be it on a short-term basis, and continue playing the same way. For the latter to happen, signing Divock Origi makes sense and here’s how:

Origi’s pace and direct running could offer something different

It is true that the Belgian hasn’t played much for Liverpool since the start of the season. In fact, he wasn’t that great when plying his trade on loan at Wolfsburg. But that could be partly down to a career-threatening injury he suffered when Everton’s Ramiro Funes-Mori crashed into a tackle during a Merseyside Derby back in 2016.

That was the time the 23-year-old was at his peak – scoring goals, making dangerous runs in behind and being the main man for the Reds. Hence, we can say that the ankle-breaking injury did slow the Belgian’s progress.

However, he is not short of quality. He may not be playing much at Anfield since there are better players ahead in the pecking order. But if offered a chance and regular game time, we could still see the striker doing his thing.

Tottenham should sign him as their style of play is pretty similar to Liverpool’s. Hence, the adaptation process won’t take much time.

This would also allow Pochettino to continue playing his style of football and utilize the new striker. Furthermore, Origi can play up top with Kane as well whenever the Englishman returns from injury.
