According to Liverpool Echo, Jasper Cillessen has come across as a surprise candidate to move to Everton.
The Toffees have already struck a few deals with Barcelona in the last couple of years with Andre Gomes, Lucas Digne and Yerry Mina coming in, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they were to do it again but it’s the position that’s a little surprising.
Cillessen in recent weeks was also linked with Manchester United as the Red Devils aren’t certain of David De Gea’s future at the club. Cillessen has played second fiddle to the extraordinary Marc Andre Ter Stegen but is a top goalkeeper in his own right.
He’ll most likely be starting in the Nations League semi-final against England, which shows just how highly he is thought of. The Dutch international goalkeeper has made 48 appearances for the national team and still has many years to give as a goalkeeper.
Cillessen will have to keep in mind that he might not be the first choice as Jordan Pickford, the current England number one, is considered the future of not just Everton but also the England national team. Hence, this could hamper Pickford’s development.
Pickford is by no means the perfect goalkeeper and is still developing. Cilessen would be a great foil for him to learn from but with Everton not having made it to the European competitions this season, it would be a bit of a bizarre move from Pickford and Cilessen’s perspective.
Everton have a massive summer to look towards. After making a bright start to the season with a new manager and new players, they had a torrid run of games that saw them languishing in the bottom half of the table.
They found some form after the draw to Liverpool, which was followed by wins at home against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, which saw them achieve a respectable 8th place finish.
Everton have far greater ambitions than 8th place and will be hoping that this transfer window helps them move forward. Cillessen would be a good player to symbolize this change but Everton should be looking at other areas first.

From Cilessen’s point of view, he should be moving to a club that will offer him far more minutes, otherwise, he can continue to stay put in the warmer plains of Catalonia as opposed to moving to the cold nights that are on offer at Merseyside.
