Everton opinion: The Toffees shouldn’t make a move for Shinji Kagawa

Shinji Kagawa could be making a comeback to the premier league after being linked with a move to Everton. The Toffees will be looking forward to plugging the gaps in their squad and have seen Kagawa as someone who could help.

The Toffees started the season brightly before falling into a rut that saw them outside the top half of the table. After an inspiring draw against Liverpool at Goodison Park, the tide started to shift as they started picking up some big wins against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United.

Everton have struggled for goals from their centre-forwards and have had to depend an awful lot on Richarlison and Gylfi Siggurdson to rack up the goals. Cenk Tosun and Dominic- Calvert-Lewin haven’t been prolific enough for a team with European ambitions.

Kagawa is a former premier league winner and had an exciting first season under Sir Alex Ferguson but struggled to have a similar impact under David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal. He’s now at Besiktas and has had a bit of a fall from grace.

The Japanese is still very capable of scoring and providing goals. He can also be deployed in various forward positions, depending on the demands of the game, but with Siggurdson in the team for the exact reason, Everton should be looking to other areas before thinking of adding depth to positions of strength.

Everton have to look at right-back, a striker, a right-winger and centre-back before they look at a creative midfielder. Perhaps, if they get these priority signings over the line, they can look at other sides in the squad for adding depth.

Conclusion

Taking everything into account, perhaps, this isn’t the best time for Everton to be looking at a 30-year-old who is past his prime in a position of strength. Everton can’t afford to make the mistakes from previous years.
