The Perfect French Kid That Arsenal Should Sign This Summer

Share

Arsenal transfer window story so far – Jovetic, Rooney, Higuain, Fellaini, Cesar are some of the big names linked along with a countless number of French kids and youngsters from Ligue 1 + a £70m transfer kitty that Wenger is determined to use. These are all the speculated news that have come up so far.

However, fans in London know a little more than that, it is believed that these rumours are started somehow to increase the ‘season tickets’ renewals which have been extended for a day or two this year and the final deadline was 7th June. So the ST renewals are well past us now, and did he hear any advancements in any of the rumoured players? Well, the answer is no. Before we go further, am just stopping you here. Instead of speculating on big money moves, lets focus on a rather possible transfer that Wenger would/should do this summer.

Clement Grenier

In this regard Arsenal are trying to rope in Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier, who has suddenly shot to fame with his stellar performances for the French side this season. The player has uncanny resemblance to former Arsenal starlet SamirNasri. He has had such an impact on the club that Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has compared Grenier with German youngster Mario Gotze. Although this may be a bit exaggerated quote drawing parallels with Gotze, Grenier has certainly shown the class and the talent to feature amongst any top side in Europe.

With his contract running till 2014, Lyon cannot afford to let him leave for free next summer. Rather there are positive chances on Arsenal’s part to seal the deal this summer.

Coming to Arsenal’s point of view, you can may argue the fact that Grenier would not bring much to the team right now and his addition would be a bit unnecessary at this moment. Looking at the current Gunners midfield currently, Grenier’s presence will mean that Wenger have to sacrifice (or rather rotate his squad frequently) either Arteta or Ramsey irrespective of their positions in order to fit in the play-maker, but then any top club in the world should not only think about the present scenario when going in for a transfer. Grenier would certainly add depth to the squad which is so very essential when a club is in pursuit of silverware and are willing to go to any lengths to achieve that. Do United, Chelsea, City think solely about the player’s development instead of silverware?

Sky Sports earlier reported that Grenier would welcome the prospect of moving to Arsenal, as he said:

“I have more or less made a decision about which club I want to join. I have made the choice for sporting reasons above all. Arsenal? It could well be them.”

“There would be competition for places, but you get that at all big clubs and it does not stop me making my decision. I am still young, but I have always set myself targets and I do everything possible to exceed them.”

Earlier this week, it was said that Grenier would remain in Lyon without extending his contract. However, things have changed now and his agent, Frederic Guerra, told RMC nothing has yet been decided. Quoted by ESPN as,

“There are a lot of questions surrounding Clement’s case. To choose is to give up. Clement has told Jean-Michel Aulas and Remi Garde a number of things, and is waiting for answers,” Guerra said.

“We’re supposed to meet each other when he gets back from holiday. Things are going the way that Clement is perhaps going to stay, but the reverse is possible too. There’s nothing definite, there are still meetings to be held. A career choice is not something to be left to chance. Are you really going to earn a year in your career by leaving straightaway? It’s really a major headache.”

So what do you think Arsenal should do? For starters, the midfielder has been compared with Brazilian star Juninho for this thunderous free-kicks which could solve Arsenal’s long standing problem with set pieces plus Grenier’s presence could mean a couple of decent long range strikes which is another area that the Gunners would love to strengthen. Although this move would mean a lot more bench time for Rosicky, Ramsey and even Grenier, for Arsenal as a team it is definitely a right move.
