Tactic talk – How Jorginho’s inclusion has galvanised Chelsea’s midfield

Chelsea have made a perfect start to this season, winning all four games thus far, with the squad acclimatising to the attractive style of play under new manager Maurizio Sarri. The Blues didn’t do much in the transfer window this summer, after the late arrival of the new manager.

However, they did a really good business by signing Italian international midfielder Jorginho, who was in the Napoli squad last season, where Sarri was managing until May. The 2016/17 Premier League champions bought the player for £50m on a five-year deal.

Safe to say, the 26-year-old has brought a tangible difference to Chelsea’s midfield. The Blues seem to have more control and command in the central areas, which enables them to dominate games on the front foot, very much what Sarri’s philosophy is all about.

Here’s how Jorginho has made a telling difference upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge:

Analysis – Jorginho’s play for Chelsea

Jorginho’s arrival has pushed N’Golo Kante to the No.8 position, where the Frenchman is more of a box-to-box midfielder. Meanwhile, the Italian is making the No.6 position his own with every passing game. His eye for accurate passes along with the ability to win second balls is pretty impressive.

Jorginho

The 26-year-old’s vision from deeper areas to pick out uncharted runs in behind a defence is imperious, to say the least. He has a pass success rate of over 91%, with an average of over 100 passes per game. Jorginho is that cog in Sarri’s system without who the plan would most certainly fail.

The Italian has helped Kante to become a fantastic No.8, from where he can make forward runs when required, or remain behind the attack to win second balls.

For instance, Jorginho had 94 touches of the ball against Bournemouth, which was more than the combined touch count of the whole of Cherries’ midfield (84). So, one can imagine how hard it will be for teams to attack this Chelsea team on the counter.

Verdict

There is a reason why Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola wanted the midfielder at the Etihad this summer – quality player in all aspects of his position on the pitch. Hence, Chelsea should be delighted that they have got this incredible talent to work with the manager.
