Newcastle United opinion: Should the Magpies sign Kevin Trapp?
According to a report from the Shields Gazette, Newcastle United have been offered the opportunity to sign PSG’s Kevin Trapp in the summer. The German shot-stopper is currently on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, who have had a phenomenal season in the Bundesliga.
The report reveals that Trapp’s agent Pini Zahavi has alerted the Magpies over the availability of his client in the summer but a move could still fail if Gianluigi Buffon leaves the French champions in the summer.
However, Newcastle are already pretty covered in the goalkeeping department with Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow, Rob Elliot and Freddie Woodman all capable of having a decent impact for the Magpies between the sticks.
Dubravka has been a huge hit at Tyneside since his arrival and he is Rafa Benitez’s undisputed first-choice at the club. The arrival of Kevin Trapp will give the Slovakian some good competition but it will also hinder the progress of someone like Freddie Woodman.
Trapp, as good as he is, always looks like he has a mistake in him, which has cost him a starting role with the French champions. The German has looked shaky at times in goal for Frankfurt and almost gave away a free goal to Cesar Azpilicueta in their semi-final tie against Chelsea in the Europa League.
Newcastle are not in a position to afford such mistakes in goal and the huge factor of adjusting to a new league will not help Trapp’s cause if he makes the move next season. Dubravka has been phenomenal for the Magpies over the last one year.
The Slovakian has often single-handedly saved Newcastle during his time at St. James’ Park and he deserves to keep his place as their number one next season.
Freddie Woodman has shown real promise with the Magpies’ youth setup and the youngster too deserves a chance with the senior squad next season.
Woodman has all the qualities to be a top goalkeeper in the coming years and being a third-choice goalkeeper at the club wastes his talents. Signing Trapp will prove to be a massive hindrance to the youngster’s development and Newcastle should at no cost sign him in the summer.

Conclusion
Newcastle United should concentrate on spending their money on areas which need improvement.
The Magpies have a top goalkeeper in Dubravka and his backups are good enough to do a job when required. Signing Trapp makes no sense and it would be a waste of both time and money in the summer.
