Sheffield United’s pursuit of this 24-year-old defender from PL rivals makes absolute sense – Here’s why

Why Daniel Amartey would be a smart signing for Sheffield United

According to a report from Leicester Mercury, Premier League newbies Sheffield United are interested in Leicester City defender Daniel Amartey.

Daniel Amartey, 24, has struggled to hold down a regular place in the Leicester side since his arrival from FC Copenhagen back in January 2016. He broke his ankle against West Ham in October following an innocuous challenge with Michail Antonio, leaving him on the sidelines for a minimum of six months.

However, the Ghanaian returned to training earlier this month after missing the majority of the last campaign. And the 24-year-old is now wanted by Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder, who aspires to bring in a defensive midfielder who can also play in defence next season, the report adds.

The Blades signed Oli McBurnie from Swansea City on Tuesday for a club-record deal worth up to £20m, breaking their transfer record for the fourth time this summer following promotion.

They have also signed forwards Callum Robinson and Lys Mousset, midfielders Ravel Morrison, Luke Freeman and Ben Osborn, former defender Phil Jagielka and goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Central midfield is a particular area that Sheffield United aimed to improve. John Fleck, Oliver Norwood and John Lundstram are currently the only natural options in the position. Two of the new arrivals – Luke Freeman and Ravel Morrison – are able to operate there, but prefer to play further forward. Therefore, signing Daniel Amartey may not be the worst idea.

A defensive midfielder by trade, Amartey can also operate in the backline as a central defender or right-back. He is moderately paced and can spray some accurate passes from midfield.

The 24-year-old is a dominant presence at the middle of the pitch and is renowned for his defensive work-rate inside his own half. The Ghanaian is an excellent tackler and can make some vital interceptions for his side.

Amartey is Premier League proven material, who could turn out to be a decent acquisition for the Blades. He is versatile enough to play in multiple positions across the midfield and defence.

His versatility and tackling traits will add some much-needed bite to Wilder’s midfield at Bramall Lane, adding balance to the squad.

Verdict

Amartey will undoubtedly enhance the overall quality of the Blades squad. Thus, he is a realistic target for United at the moment and will certainly help Wilder’s side achieve survival on their first season back in the Premier League.
