Liverpool once again emerged victorious in their International Champions Cup clash against the Red Devils. Jurgen Klopp’s men made a strong start against their arch-rivals, showing more intensity and urgency. The Reds won the game with a 4-1 scoreline.
Though some would say the game is just a friendly, in reality, it was way more than that. Tensions rose in the first 10 minutes as Liverpool rued a number of missed chances in front of goal.
Jurgen Klopp fielded a strong line-up consisting the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Van Dijk, Lallana, Fabinho and Milner. The Reds, who sported their new grey third kit, were venomous on the attack and posed a huge threat on the counter.
The Reds’ defence was solid as well, with Van Dijk making a goalline clearance to keep Manchester United at bay. Sadio Mane opened the scoring in the 28th minute via a penalty after Manchester United youngster Demetri Mitchell brought down Mohamed Salah in the box.
Manchester United were quick to find a reply through Andreas Pereira, who curled a sublime free-kick into the top corner. Regardless of that brief comeback, Liverpool then dominated the rest of the game, keeping possession and shredding the Manchester United defence to pieces.
Daniel Sturridge gave Liverpool the lead again in the 66th minute after coming on as a substitute in the second half. Jurgen Klopp also handed a debut to new signing Xherdan Shaqiri, who claimed the assist for Sturridge’s goal.
Sheyi Ojo went on to add a third in the 74th minute and debutant Shaqiri shut down the game with a goal in his first appearance for the club, and what a goal it was. Woodburn clipped a cross into the box and the Swiss international executed a stunning bicycle kick.
There were a number of positive for Jurgen Klopp to take back from the game. Fabinho proved his worth once again bringing a sense of stability and cohesion in the middle of the park. Youngster Camacho displayed tons of potential in his game.
Some Liverpool fans on Twitter were overjoyed with the win, and here’s how they reacted.
