So when you put in a world class performance in any big match and especially in an El Clasico you are in for some praises. Raphael Varane, the 19-year old French defender had one such night yesterday. A potential birth of a new star may be ? Well, this is not the first time Varane was impressive in the bigger stages. Back in October, when Real Madrid thrashed Mallorca 5-0 in the league, the youngster had put in a sturdy performance alongside Pepe, keeping a clean sheet in the process. But his performance in last night’s Copa del Rey clash with Barcelona was his best yet.
Talking about his performance Varane feels the same, he said:
“It’s the best match I’ve had at Real Madrid. My teammates congratulated me and I have to keep giving my best.”
In the 24th minute, Barcelona had a chance to go ahead following a poor back pass from Carvalho, which allowed Barca to regain possession. But the 19 year old saw the danger and ran back to clear Xavi Hernandez’s ensuing effort off the line. Numerous other interventions followed, but in the 81st minute he rose to the occasion and scored the equaliser which keeps Madrid in the contest when they face Barcelona in the second leg.
So far Raphael’s chances to make a first team appearance have usually come along due to suspensions and injuries of senior players, but every time he’s called upon, he has risen to the occasion. The French U-21 International has got what it takes to be a great defender, he is quick and boasts great technical abilityfor a defensive player. He is good in the air, strong in the tackle and looks calm and composed in his job.
This is a quality that we are used to seeing from experienced, veteran defenders, not from a teenager. It was his compatriot and club legend, Zidane who convinced the classy centre-half to join the Galacticos and the presence of Mourinho should have also been a factor in the youngster signing for Real Madrid
When asked if he was surprised by the young Frenchman’s performances in defence this season, the Portuguese coach responded with:
“Varane debuted with us last year against Rayo, he did not make his debut this year. He already has numerous games with the first team. It’s a surprise for those that have not been paying attention to this team, but for us, it’s little surprise at all.”
