Rangers signing this veteran Welshman would add some much-needed experience to their back-line

Why should Rangers sign Ashley Williams to solidify the back-line

Rangers have made a decent enough start to their season and to life under new manager Steven Gerrard. They are third in the Scottish Premiership table, with 24 points from 12 games, two points behind leaders and defending champions Celtic.

Although they have been free-scoring at the top end of the pitch, the Gers are beginning to show vulnerability at the back. They have shipped 11 goals in 12 league games (five more than the leaders) and seven in four Europa League group stage matches.

The schoolboy defending against Spartak Moscow a week back should have rung the alarm bells around the club. The manager can improve the structural form of the team, however, there seems to be a case for the club to buy a new centre-back with experience, someone who can lead the back-line and demand 100% from each player.

That being said, here’s why Rangers should keep close tabs on Ashley Williams and sign the Welshman sooner than later:

Williams would add experience and leadership

If we look at the age of the centre-backs Rangers currently have, Nikola Katic is 22 years old, Ross McCrorie is 20 years old, Connor Goldson is 25 years old, Joe Worrall is 21 years old.

These are young numbers for a position which requires the most care. An ideal prime age for a centre-back starts from 27 and goes up until 33 or 34.

The current crop of defenders at Steven Gerrard’s disposal are still a work in progress, hence, performances of high vulnerability are bound to come in between. They have Gareth McAuley but he is 38 and doesn’t play as much as a regular first-team player would do.

Hence, the Gers need someone like Ashley Williams, who is currently 34 years old and possesses the experience to guide a relatively young back-line.

The Welshman has played in the Championship, Premier League and for his country in big tournaments. Hence, it is viable to say that the former Swansea captain would be an ideal foil for the Scottish club.

Furthermore, Williams is a quality centre-back and a real leader on and off the pitch. That would not only help the team members but also the manager, who was a legendary player who is still very young in his management career.

Culminating all the facts, it is easy to conclude that Rangers should sign the 34-year-old in the January transfer window or next summer.
