Rangers signing this impressive 29-year-old star would add some much-needed depth

Why Charlton’s Lyle Taylor could be a fantastic signing for Rangers

According to Sky Sports, Rangers are one of the clubs weighing up a January swoop for Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor.

Lyle Taylor, 29, has scored 5 goals in 8 appearances this season in the Championship and bagged 25 in 45 for Lee Bowyer’s men in League One last season. The forward, who has missed three months of the 2019/20 campaign with a knee injury, starred alongside current Ibrox midfielder Joe Aribo in the 2018/19 season.

However, the Montserrat international is out of contract in the summer and his situation at Charlton has also attracted interest from West Brom, Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea, the report adds.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has done a superb job in the 18 months that he’s been at Ibrox and led the club to the knockout phase of the Europa League with a 1-1 draw against Young Boys on Thursday. As a reward, the Gers handed Gerrard a new deal until 2024.

The Light Blues, trailing their arch-rivals by two points, have already lost one domestic trophy to Celtic this season. Nonetheless, they have a great chance of winning the Premiership this season and Gerrard should bolster his team’s title hopes by adding a couple of players in January.

Signing a new striker in January 2020 wouldn’t be a bad idea, regardless of Alfredo Morelos banging goals left, right and centre. Morelos has 26 goals in all competitions this season, acting as Rangers’ talisman.

Other than the Colombian, the Gers also have an experienced head in Jermain Defoe. So signing a striker may not appear as a priority, but the Light Blues could be in trouble if either of Morelos or Defoe gets injured.

That’s why Rangers should look to bring in Lyle Taylor. The 29-year-old, who joined Charlton on a free transfer from Wimbledon in June 2018, enjoyed a successful spell at Falkirk in the 2012/13 season, scoring 29 goals in 42 games in Scotland’s second-tier.

He’s also had two loan stints with Partick Thistle. His previous experience of Scottish football should ideally help him adapt to the demands of the Premiership quickly.

As per WhoScored, Taylor has averaged an impressive 0.4 key passes, 1.9 shots and 0.3 dribbles per game in the Championship this season.

All in all, the Charlton Athletic star would provide a significant boost to the Rangers attack. Taylor has been a prolific goalscorer for the Addicks and possesses the attributes to make an instant impact at the Ibrox.
