According to a report in Scottish Sun, rivals Rangers and Celtic are among the favourites to sign striker Daniel Sturridge this summer after his exit from Liverpool following their Champions League triumph.
The former England international has left Merseyside after six and a half years. He is now a free agent and any club could make a swoop. (h/t Scottish Sun)
As a matter of fact, Sturridge did play with current Rangers boss Steven Gerrard. The duo went very close to handing Liverpool their first league title back in 2014, only for Manchester City to snatch it away.
While the two Scottish giants are in the race to sign the 29-year-old, Premier League side Leicester City, whose manager Brendan Rodgers was the Reds gaffer during that infamous 13/14 season, is also looking to sign the striker. (h/t Scottish Sun)
Here’s why Rangers should beat their old firm rivals and Leicester City to sign Sturridge:
Currently, Rangers have Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos as the two centre-forward options. Kyle Lafferty is there but he hasn’t done enough to make Steven Gerrard trust him.
While Morelos is a very fine striker who can carry the scoring burden for the team, he is a volatile character who cannot be trusted to be available in every game.
On the other hand, Defoe did well in his first season in Scottish football but he is 36 now and cannot play week after week. He could still be a very good bit-part player who can provide impactful moments during the course of the season.
Hence, it makes sense for Gerrard’s men to sign Sturridge, whether or not Morelos stays at the club. The ex-Liverpool man is a quality striker who is ruthless in front of goal and could do with a change of place in order to regain top form.
Having played with the Rangers manager before, the 29-year-old would most probably settle down well under him.

Therefore, we can clearly say that the Gers could benefit hugely from having Sturridge in their squad next season. From the player’s viewpoint, playing under his former teammate wouldn’t be a bad idea as well.
