Possible Manchester United Lineup To Play Against Liverpool – Carrick, Mata And Di Maria To Start

Share

Manchester United’s season and their European hopes hinge massively on this Sunday’s trip to Anfield as Louis van Gaal’s side look to build momentum after a convincing 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. The task isn’t an easy one, as Liverpool are in red hot form at the moment and are unbeaten domestically since the 3-0 drubbing by United at Old Trafford. Brendan Rodgers’ side have taken 19 points from their last seven games and will be a force to reckon with at Anfield on Sunday.

United produced one of their best performances in recent history as they blew Tottenham away last weekend, and the return of Angel Di Maria from suspension may well give Louis van Gaal one or two selection headaches before a make-or-break match that could decide the fates of both these illustrious sides.

Let’s take a look at the United lineup which could take the field at Anfield.

Goalkeeper – David De Gea

One of the best in the world at the moment without a shadow of a doubt, the Spaniard is undoubtedly the No.1 between the sticks for the Red Devils.

Defence – Valencia, Smalling, Jones, Blind.

As Jonny Evans continues to serve the remainder of his six match suspension, there’s no reason for Louis van Gaal to tinker with a defence that kept the likes of Kane and Eriksen quiet last weekend. Antonio Valencia has been tidy at right back while Chris Smalling and Phil Jones may face a few unnerving moments thanks to the sizzling Philippe Coutinho. Daley Blind should take his place at left back.

Midfield – Carrick, Herrera, Mata, Fellaini, Di Maria.

Michael Carrick is the brain of the team, orchestrating the play from his deeper midfield role. Ander Herrera could be in for a real matchup in midfield as the Spaniard would have to find spaces in a packed midfield region. Last weekend, Marouane Fellaini did what he does best – giving United an aerial advantage, shielding the ball and bringing the wide men into play. Louis van Gaal would want more of the same from the Belgian.

Juan Mata had a great game against Spurs as he settled well to the system that suits United at the moment, dropping inside from the right and combining well with Valencia. Angel Di Maria hasn’t been in the best of touch and while the Argentine’s selection may be a gamble, he has the ability to unlock the Liverpool defence.

Striker – Wayne Rooney

United’s man for all seasons and occasions – Wayne Rooney scored a wonderful solo goal against Spurs and seems to be relishing his center forward role.
