Which Positions Tottenham Need To Strengthen This Summer To Fight For The title

Share

Mauricio Pochettino has a tough act to follow this season with his Tottenham side. The London club finished third, above all expectations last season, and there are hopes that they can go on and win the title this season if the Argentine heading the side can get a few more quality players in.

Ultimately, it was the lack of world class cover for a number of positions that did cost Tottenham last season as they were destined to finish at least second but ended up third, again behind Arsenal.

Even though players such as Mousa Dembele and Harry Kane had excellent seasons, and the rise of Dele Alli cannot be forgotten, there were times that the London club looked short on staff, especially in defence that did prove to be a major issue for the team.

Tottenham have to worry about a lot of other clubs with new managers and the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City have already strengthened their team with a few excellent signings. Zlatan Ibrahimovic to United and Ilkay Gundogan are just a couple of world class players who would be coming to the Premier League next term and Pochettino has to look at which sections need a lot of work in the team.

A blunt forward line without Harry Kane

The first position of the team that Pochettino needs to address is the forward line. Harry Kane was the only striker who actually did anything worthwhile at Tottenham last season and without him, the club would have finished somewhere in mid-table.

Since the side will be playing a greater number of games this time around, Pochettino should bring in decent cover for the English striker. Moussa Dembele was a lost cause as he surprisingly joined Celtic and the side now must go full-throttle to sign the likes of Vincent Janssen or even Saido Berahino.

The other region where Tottenham need an upgrade is central defence as only having the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer will not be enough next season. Especially when the likes of Vertonghen and Alderweireld are both injured, Spurs look devoid of any quality at the back.

The London club might also contemplate bringing in another quality winger to provide the likes of Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela a break. They might have to bring in two wingers/attacking players in case Nacer Chadli does leave the club, since he did not have the best of seasons last time around.

Tottenham have a lot of youngsters coming through the ranks but that would not be enough if the side are to challenge for the Premier League title next season. Spurs do have a good chance of finishing in the top four but that can only be made secure if they go out and buy players for some of the positions as discussed.

Anything less than a top four finish would be a disappointment for the side and could spell doom for a lot of the players and even the coaching staff.
