Opinion – Why this 21-year-old could massively benefit by playing under Gerrard at Rangers

Share

Is this the player we can build our team around? That’s the sort of question Rangers fans have been asking themselves recently. And the player in question? Jordan Rossiter!

It’s a tough one, really. The midfielder, who joined the Gers from Liverpool two summers ago, has hardly featured for the Scottish giants, owing to his injury problems. He has thus far managed only 11 appearances in all competitions for Rangers, scoring once.

Rossiter is undoubtedly talented. The 21-year-old, who shone for the Liverpool youth sides, has also tried to give his all at Ibrox. He was once dubbed “the next Steven Gerrard” during his time on Merseyside. And who’s his manager at Ibrox now? Yes, none other than Gerrard himself!

Rossiter made his first team debut for Liverpool in September 2014. The then-17-year-old went on to score a Gerrard-esque goal after just 10 minutes against Middlesbrough.

Injuries plagued his time at Anfield too. Rossiter wasn’t getting enough playing time at Liverpool, and Rangers swooped in to snap him up in the summer of 2016. But as mentioned earlier, injuries have stalled his progress in Scotland as well.

Now, why can Rossiter benefit from playing under Gerrard? Well, first of all, he needs a bit of luck on his side. If he manages to steer clear of injuries then he can really fulfill his potential at Ibrox.

And the new manager could help. Gerrard knows Rossiter well as the two were teammates at Liverpool. The youngster is a talented ball playing midfielder, who is comfortable in possession and has an eye for a pass. And Gerrard was a similar player.

If everything goes well, Rossiter might take a huge step forward in his development under Gerrard. Working with the Liverpool legend will be extremely beneficial for the former England Under-19 international.

The Rangers fans will be hoping to see Rossiter injury-free, and if that happens, they will have two Gerrards – one on the sidelines, and one on the pitch. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?
