Wigan 0-1 Derby County: Lampard’s Rams grab a vital away win

Derby County continued their charge towards promotion places in the Championship table with a vital 1-0 win away against Wigan Athletic this Saturday afternoon. Jack Marriott scored the only goal of the game to seal a hard-fought three points for the Rams against a 10-man Latics side.

A Jayden Bogle cross found Marriott, who was back in the team after a foot injury. The latter headed the ball into the net in the 21st minute. Six minutes prior to this goal, Kal Naismith was sent off for the home team for hauling down Harry Wilson as he ran onto a through ball supplied by Marriott.

Frank Lampard’s men almost doubled the lead in the 27th minute but Wilson’s shot was cleared off the line by Nathan Byrne following a Christian Walton save. The loanee from Liverpool was in trouble of getting a second yellow card for diving in the 67th minute, however, the referee didn’t see that as a bookable offence.

Wigan pressed for a late equaliser as they had Josh Windass’ effort denied by an offside flag. Derby got the much-needed win, keeping a clean sheet after a while.

This result puts the Rams in fourth place on the table with 37 points, six behind leaders Norwich City. Meanwhile, Wigan are now down to 16th place in the standings with 25 points, 11 behind the promotion playoff spot.

Lampard’s men now have a tough home game against Nottingham Forest next Monday, while Wigan play Ipswich Town away from home next Saturday.

Here’s how the Derby fans reacted after grinding out a win at the DW Stadium. Fair to say a few were not happy with the performance of Tom Lawrence, but a few were optimistic of featuring in the Premier League next season:
