Liverpool’s best chance of silverware was demolished, after crashing out of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Foxes. Nothing seems to be working for Jurgen Klopp at the moment, with things going from bad to worse within a span of two weeks.
It all started with a 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City which was followed by a 2-2 draw against Sevilla in the Champions League. Things did not just stop there, as Liverpool continued to drop points, with a 1-1 stalemate against Burnley last week.
Jurgen Klopp himself was sick of his side’s self-inflicted misery despite dominating for the most part of the 90 minutes. It was almost like a deja vu moment, with Liverpool repeating the same silly defensive mistakes time and again.
So what are the important areas that Klopp needs to fix after the debacle at King Power Stadium? Let’s take a look.
Liverpool made Leicester look like a Sunday league side in the first 45 minutes of the game, with the Reds creating plenty of chances and getting shots on target. Leicester looked clueless with the pace at which Liverpool were coming at them.
Liverpool were making some crisp passes and looked like they would score every time they went forward. But, they simply couldn’t get even one into the net. The Reds simply lacked the quality in front of goal to get themselves a lead in the game.
Klopp must work on Liverpool’s finishing in the final third, be it the final pass or be it the final shot, as they are wasting easy chances. Most of the chances that Dominic Solanke and Oxlade Chamberlain missed in the game were simple ones and should have ended up in the back of the net.
Liverpool absolutely do not have an answer to teams that sit back and defend in their half. Teams like Burnley have given Liverpool a tough time in recent times with their solid defensive approach.
The Reds have found it hard to break deep-lying sides with their pressing approach. Klopp has time and again faced the same problem and has had no result with his current form of approach. The German manager must devise a new way to penetrate tough defences in the games to come, and should not solely be dependant on his pressing game.
Although the Carabao Cup might not be as essential as other Cup competitions, Klopp should not have approached it in the way he did. Silverware has long eluded Liverpool and the Carabao Cup was one of their best chances of silverware this season.
But Jurgen Klopp fielding an inexperienced side against Leicester cost him a good chance at nabbing a trophy. Klopp simply cannot repeat the same mistake when they once again face the Foxes this weekend.
